WATCH: Manflesh video pokes fun at CD vs. vinyl debate
New York City-based garage rockers Manflesh have dropped a new single, “Shingy Shoo,” and the accompanying music video presents a humorous take on a never-ending physical media debate. Shot at the shop Lofidelic Records in Belmar, New Jersey, the video features a male CD fan and a female vinyl enthusiast arguing back and forth as they point out the flaws of each format.
Filmmaker Steve Herold, who participated in 360°Sound‘s “CD Junkies” series a few years ago, co-directed the video with Danielle Hoffman. He shared the following with 360°Sound about the genesis of the “Shingy Shoo” video:
“One day I was exercising on a treadmill of all places and the idea of this meet-cute scenario popped into my head centered around music fans – physical music fans. The age-old battle: CDs vs vinyl! I was listening to Manflesh’s album a lot at the time for songs we could make videos for. I knew we needed what I call an ‘ass shaker’ and ‘Shingy Shoo’ came on and I just turned to [Hoffmann] and said, ‘That’s it.'”
Manflesh frontman Richard Grant said he had the chorus idea for “Shingy Shoo” clinking around in his head for years, and when the band needed another song for their debut album, Light Up The Night, he set to work on finishing the track.
“Lyrically, it was inspired by old New Orleans rock-n-roll songs with titles like “Ooh Poo Pah Doo” by Jessie Hill,” Grant said. “Although it doesn’t really sound like those tunes at all, I wanted it to have a similar fun vibe.”
Manflesh’s Light Up The Night is available on all streaming platforms, and the digital album can be purchased on their Bandcamp. We here at 360°Sound eagerly await a proper CD release. #TeamCD
