Texas country trio The Powell Brothers have released a recording and music video of the holiday classic “The Christmas Song.” 360°Sound interviewed singer/guitarist Taylor Powell and bassist/guitarist Blake Powell in August. [Click here to read the Q&A]. Formed in 2014, The Powell Brothers have released one full-length album and three EPs. Their rockin’ single “How It’s Done” has been climbing the Texas country charts since its release in July.
Every year, the group releases a Christmas single and music video. “The Christmas Song,” which was written in 1945 by Robert Wells and Mel Tormé, is their third holiday release. They have also done “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” and “It’s Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas.”
Taylor Powell told 360° that Nat King Cole’s recording of “The Christmas Song” is one of his all-time favorites.
“We love Christmas music, and I particularly love Christmas ballads,” he said. “[‘The Christmas Song’] is a song I’ve always wanted to do, and when the arrangement came together like it did, I jumped at it.”
Powell added that he’s a fan of simple arrangements.
“I really do enjoy the lushness of most popular Christmas recordings, but I am drawn to the idea of these Christmas songs as played by a simple three-piece band,” he said. “I feel like our take on ‘The Christmas Song’ is something different. The hardest part of recording traditional Christmas music is trying to find a new way to play these venerated songs, without losing the song’s warmth, spirit and comfort. My goal was to walk the line between new and old, fresh and familiar.”
When asked if there are plans for a Christmas album, Blake Powell said: “Our fans haven’t been shy about letting us know they want a Christmas album. I would say a release is certainly in our future, and sooner than later. Right now, we’re just trying to make the best arrangements we can. As they say in football, we are taking it one game at a time.”
