Description
The Skinny: The Sweet, a glam-rock pop band, were huge in England and got respectable AM-radio traction in America. This set collects the hits that charted the highest in the States. Filled out with UK hits, this retrospective is quite thorough.
Sounds like: T. Rex, Slade, Bay City Rollers, The Pretty Things, Queen
Deeper Thoughts: This is the most fun you can have listening to rock-n-roll. Break out one of your mom’s old wigs and a denim vest and all right fellas… Let’s go!!! Seriously, these guys just pounded out the good-time rock. Let’s make them honorary members of Detroit booze-rock society. All my aunts had the same hair-do as these crotch rockers. This is one of those sets I put on for one song, then I keep thinking, “Maybe just one more.” “Fox on the Run” is the earliest memory I have of getting stupid about a 45.
The Sonics: I know it was the early ’70s and these were primarily AM radio cuts, but damn it why can’t this set have a little more balls? I can see the band’s balls on the album cover, for gawdsake. If, when listening on headphones, I can’t feel it in my neck below ear-level we need some help somewhere in the 20 – 250 Hz. I have to crank this to get any low-end, but with that much gain ear fatigue sets in after about four tunes. I guess maybe you don’t need any more than that at one sitting…
