Description
The Skinny: Complete Discography is a 1989 compilation album released by the American hardcore punk band Minor Threat on the band’s own Dischord Records label. As the title implies, this set contains their entire recorded works as of 1989.
Sounds like: Bad Brains, Black Flag, Minutemen, Descendants, The Germs, The Dead Kennedys
Deeper Thoughts: This is some seminal punk rock shit, right here. Vocalist Ian McKaye and drummer Jeff Nelson did it themselves before it was sort of the only way to make a go of it. Minor Threat set the blueprint for artists for how to self-produce, self-promote and sleep in a fucking van. This material has not aged one day; there are still bands trying to sound exactly like this. That’s what can happen when a band is truly about the art. We had them pegged all along. Damn.
The Sonics: It was 1989 and CD as an audio format was still trying to find its groove. The stuff from Out of Step sounds pretty good, with a bit of low-end thump. But the early stuff sounds thin and brittle. I have to crank it to get some decent gain and low-end response, which leads to fairly quick ear fatigue. Minor Threat was DIY their entire career, so it’s fun to hear how they progressed sonically. Listen to this disc loud, in any case.
