The pandemic robbed us of many moments of live entertainment, but few were as brutal for pop fans as the two-year postponement of Lady Gaga’s Chromatica Ball tour. Originally scheduled for summer 2020 to support her Chromatica album, the album and tour were seen as the artist’s long-awaited return to the dance floor.
2008’s The Fame marked Gaga’s powerful emergence in the world of pop, and her live shows quickly became must-see events. But by the mid-teens, she had stepped away from the club and spent the next few years surprisingly doing anything but dancing.
Chromatica proved she wasn’t ready to hang up her dance-pop platforms. Boasting a return to form that included the chart-topping Billboard Hot 100 hit “Rain on Me,” the album fused elements of ’90s dance with modern pop tropes we’ve come to expect. Chromatica didn’t reinvent the wheel, but it’s a lot of fun, and the same can be said for her new show. Like her past outings, the Chromatica Ball is an ambitious spectacle, consisting of an epilogue, four acts and a finale.
The concept for the show is Gaga’s attempt to break free from the physical, emotional, and metaphorical traps in her life, en route to liberation. Outside of video interludes, I’m not sure if that narrative is readily apparent to her audience, including yours truly. Quite likely, fans will be more amazed by her bombastic outfits and her best-in-class team of dancers.
The Chromatica Ball is not just a concert, it’s a Gaga immersion experience. Prepare to be dazzled, rocked, and visually stimulated for two hours, with a night of boogieing for which your dancing legs will pay a price.
Pro tip for Ball attendees – arrive early. “Poker Face,” “Just Dance,” and “Bad Romance” make appearances at the very beginning of Gaga’s setlist. She dispenses with the hits early so she can devote the rest of the evening to her new material.
Get on Gaga’s dance card now – you never know where m’Lady might be headed next. Mother Monster beckons.
